Artist's statement...

I am fascinated by technology and this also becomes the subject of my art. My main influences are mathematical and geometric forms and the interaction of light with the elements, issues of both art and technology.

I see rhythm and beauty in mathematical sequences and geometric forms. Look at nature, shells for example, or honeycombs. There are natural rules that nature conforms to, which result in the beauty on the surface. DNA for example, a beautiful structure in itself and not visible to the naked eye, or the physical laws that result in the way water flows and ripples are formed. Patterns, textures, waves, even the colours of light itself, are all determined by the natural rules at the core.

Although proving myself as a representational artist, I now prefer to produce abstract geometric art which you can interpret how you wish. The clue to my own interpretation is in the titles I give the pieces. I produce my art using fractal flame software. This is a form of three dimensional fractal, or geometric sequence. I love these forms as they have endless variations and levels of subtlety. Though seemingly complex, I have full control over all the elements. To me, these patterns and sequences suggest natural forms found all around us in the natural world.

There has never been a better time for digital art, as computers are getting faster and the cost continues to come down to more acceptable levels. Most of the work that I am doing now was not possible until recently. Computers allow the rapid processing of massive amounts of mathematical data but graphics are particularly hungry for computer capacity. Besides the advancement of computers, recent improvements in printing inks and a process called Giclée, allow the possibility of cost-effectively outputting high resolution digital files on to large canvasses, with guaranteed permanent colours, these also being acceptable to commercial galleries.

Digital art consolidates all my previous skills and experience. I have worked as a technical illustrator, airbrush artist, photographer, portrait artist, painter and a commercial artist, using computer graphics and publishing software. The computer is just a tool for the artist. I still need an artist's eye to create a finished piece to my liking.

I work in digital media.

My work has a lot of intricate detail, so it looks best when printed onto large canvasses.

Digital media is very adaptable and can be made to suit many situations.
